Echo is the giveaway. A reader can forgive soft light. Nobody forgives a voice that sounds like it was recorded in a stairwell, because it flattens every choice you make.

A lavalier is the safest buy — it sits close, so the room barely registers. A desk mic like a USB dynamic works beautifully when you are seated and steady. Your phone mic is a last resort, not a plan.

Treat the wall behind the camera, not the wall behind you. That is where your voice bounces back into the mic. A duvet on a door does more than a full set of foam tiles.
