Your first self-tape does not need to be perfect; it needs to be finished. This is the five-take path we walk beginners through, start to sent.

Before you record

  1. Read the brief twice and write down file naming, slate, and length requirements.
  2. Break the scene into three beats and name what changes in each.
  3. Set the camera at eye level, chest-up framing, light at 45°, mic close.
  4. Record ten seconds and check audio on headphones.

The five takes

  1. Take 1 — technical check. Watch it back for sound, focus, framing. Do not judge the acting.
  2. Take 2 — your honest first instinct, played simply.
  3. Take 3 — raise the stakes: what if this really matters?
  4. Take 4 — change the relationship or the objective.
  5. Take 5 — forget notes and play the scene.

Almost everyone's best work is take three or take five. Take one is never the one.

Choosing and finishing

Watch takes 2–5 back once each without stopping, then pick immediately. Long deliberation pushes you towards the tidiest take rather than the most alive one.

Trim the top and tail, keep the slate as the brief asked, and export 1080p H.264.

Sending it

Name the file exactly as instructed — usually Role_LastName_FirstName. Upload the original file, use the requested delivery service, and send it before the deadline rather than at it.
