For commercial copy and industrials, a prompter app on a tablet under your lens is the difference between four takes and forty. These are the features that matter and the ones that are marketing.

The four essential features

  1. Fine speed control while scrolling, not just a preset.
  2. Mirrored output for beam-splitter rigs.
  3. A remote — Bluetooth pedal or phone — so you can pause without reaching.
  4. Adjustable font size with narrow line width to reduce eye travel.

What to ignore

Built-in cameras and recording features. Prompter apps record worse video than your stock camera, and you lose control of exposure and audio.

Watermarks on free tiers — irrelevant if you are not recording in the app, which you should not be.

Setting it up on a phone or tablet

Mount the device directly below the lens, as close as physically possible, and increase font size until you can read it comfortably at your taping distance. If you find yourself squinting, the text is too small and your eyes will show it.

Slow the scroll about 10% below your natural pace so you are leading the text, not chasing it.

Practise reading badly on purpose

Read a paragraph while deliberately losing your place and recovering. Being able to recover invisibly is the actual skill a prompter demands, and it takes about twenty minutes to learn.
